The 1st IABSE Young Engineers Colloquium in East Asia will be organized by IABSE National Groups of Japan, China and Korea. The dates is October 24 (Wed) and 25 (Thu), 2018.

Objective

This colloquium offers young engineers (under about 35 years of age) the opportunity to present interesting projects from university, research or construction practice to an audience of fellow structural engineers. There is also a design competition of footbridges. A prominent specialist on structural engineering makes a key-note lecture. Technical visits will be arranged in Shanghai.

Program(Part I, II, III)

Part I:Presentation of research papers 

Young engineers present research papers on any kind of aspects of structures including PhD studies.

Part II: Presentation of technical reports of construction project

Young engineers present construction projects of any kind of structures.  

Part III: Design Competition of Footbridges

Young engineers design original footbridges under the given design conditions and present it at the colloquium. The designs will be evaluated by international bridge experts.

Design conditions of footbridge competition:

Location: Free to choose; Main-span length: Between 50m and 100m

Bridge width for pedestrians: over 5.0m; Design live load: 3.5 kN/m²

Design wind speed: 40 m/s; Materials: Free to choose; Sufficiently good ground condition  

Evaluation points: originality, safety, serviceability, aesthetics, economy

 Technical tours to bridges and buildings in Shanghai

Application

 Young engineers under about 35 years old (born 1983 or later) can apply to one of the three parts. The presentations are going to be held in English. The best presentations of research paper, report of construction project and design of footbridge will be awarded a prize money of 30,000 yen each. Please submit a two page-paper for research, project report and footbridge design including a short Curriculum Vitae using our template by 31st July 2018.  The template is at the bottom of the page.

 Only young engineers can make presentations but everybody can participate in this colloquium.
